Meeting Notes from 1/26/11

Just a list of links that I remember we discussed at yesterday’s iLead cohort:

100 Administrator Blogs

I’m not sure about the credentials of “onlinedegrees.org,” but they sure did us all a favor by compiling a comprehensive list of what they are calling the “Top 100 School Administrator Blogs.”

I especially like the “Group Blogs” at the top since you can get the flavor of several different administrators in one blog.

More on Dropbox

Since Dropbox seems to be the runaway hit with our little cadre, here is a blog post from 30-year educator Jeff Thomas called The Complete Dropbox for Educators.

UPDATED: iPad Guide for Principals

Justin Baeder’s The Essential iPad Guide for Principals has just been updated.

According to Justin, the new version includes:

  • How to evaluate apps
  • Using the iPad for walkthroughs
  • Using the iPad as a laptop replacement

Happy reading.

GDocs on iPad

This week Google (finally!) announced editing Google Docs on mobile devices (like the iPad!). There’s a video and more information on the official Google blog.

Ultimate Dropbox Toolkit & Guide

If you’d asked me in June what I thought the big “takeaway” from Boot Camp and iLead would be, I never would have guessed Dropbox. I actually threw it into the Boot Camp day as kind of an afterthought!

Since we have so many folks so interested in the possibilities of Dropbox, I wanted to pass along this post which has ideas and suggestions from Basic to Advanced and may take your Dropbox usage from Partially Proficient to Advanced.

Enjoy!

iLead November Blog Challenge

Welcome to November, iLeaders!

Since we will not be meeting again until January 26, 2011, I’d like you to take a minute or five and help me plan the second half of iLead. On your own blog or in the comments below, please share a little about:

  1. Now that you’ve had your iPad for almost half the year, what are one or two of your biggest “a-has” or most powerful discoveries about how it supports your leadership practice?
  2. With the iLead cohort about half over, what has been most helpful to you?
  3. With half of the iLead cohort still to come, what are some ways that I can make it more relevant and useful?
  4. In short, what would you like to spend more time doing or talking about in our time together? How can I support you in your professional growth since that’s what this is really all about?

That’s it! Thanks for a great first half of the cohort and don’t forget to make plans to join us at Loveland High on Saturday, February 26, 2011, for Learning 2.0: A Colorado Conversation.

Learning 2.0: A Colorado Conversation

For the second year, the Thompson School District will host Learning 2.0: A Colorado Conversation. This year’s event will be on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Loveland High School. There will be relevant and engaging strands focused on leadership, classroom practice, and personal/professional development.

Learning 2.0 is a grassroots conference/unconference/meetup for teachers, administrators, students, school board members, parents, community, and anyone else who is interested in education. There is NO COST for attendees to join the conversation (though Thompson R2-J faculty can pay to receive TIC credit for attending).

Last year, the event drew about 150 attendees from along the Front Range, Nebraska, and Wyoming as well as another 150 participants who joined us from around the world via our online livestreams. This will be the fourth year of the event and the second time it has been held here in Thompson. It will be at another (soon-to-be-disclosed) location in 2012 so get in on the action when it’s close by!

iLead – November 10

Our next iLead gathering is on November 10. I’ve got a few things in mind, but I’d love to hear from you about items you’d like on the agenda.

Last time, we had a great discussion of how some folks are using the iPad. Add your ideas in the comments below or shoot me an email.

The iPad & Paperless Walkthroughs

If you’re not already subscribed to Justin Baeder’s blog that focuses on principal productivity, then you may have missed his recent post on using the iPad for paperless classroom walkthroughs. I’ve adopted a similar system and find it to be very efficient.

The emphasis, of course, is not on copying Justin’s system, but on finding some flow that works for you and that you can stick with.
