Myth – The Internet is a dangerous, dangerous place
With all the media attention given to the sensational such as the “Craigslist killer”, it would be easy to fall into the myth that the internet is dangerous place. From a different viewpoint, it would be easier to say that the Internet is dangerous because many in our society tend to believe what they read. I cannot count the times that I have heard students or adults state something as truth because they read it on the Internet. And with sites such as Wikipedia it is possible for users to control what many see as truth on the web.
For example, my twenty year old son, who claimed to be the King of Norway as a seven year old, decided to see if he could be be listed as the King for at least a day. Through teenage magic and the wonders of Wikipedia, Jared Derrera was, for a short time, recognized as the King of Norway.
So, is the Internet really a dangerous place? I don’t think so…maybe people are just naive, gullible and unwilling to verify what they read.
