Myth – The Internet is a dangerous, dangerous place

With all the media attention given to the sensational such as the “Craigslist killer”, it would be easy to fall into the myth that the internet is dangerous place. From a different viewpoint, it would be easier to say that the Internet is dangerous because many in our society tend to believe what they read. I cannot count the times that I have heard students or adults state something as truth because they read it on the Internet. And with sites such as Wikipedia it is possible for users to control what many see as truth on the web.
For example, my twenty year old son, who claimed to be the King of Norway as a seven year old, decided to see if he could be be listed as the King for at least a day. Through teenage magic and the wonders of Wikipedia, Jared Derrera was, for a short time, recognized as the King of Norway.
So, is the Internet really a dangerous place? I don’t think so…maybe people are just naive, gullible and unwilling to verify what they read.

Hello world!

Wow, this is somewhat intimidating for me! I was so comfortable with life in the 80′s.  No cell phones, no pagers, no internet and nobody could get a hold of me 24/7.  Yes, the hairstyles were bad, but the music was generally good and I really enjoyed life.

Now, fast forward 25 years and I am trying to learn how to use all this cool technology.  I am part of the iLead class at Thompson R2-J.  Scott Elias has been great in getting us together and giving us an opportunity to move into the 21st century before it passes us by.

My goals are rather modest – baby steps first, right?  I want to be able to use blogs and twitter to better communicate with the TVHS population with regards to athletics and activities.  In-game status, final scores, upcoming events, etc for those of you who want to follow the Eagles but are unable to do it in person or who want to discuss the happenings after the fact.

Wish me luck as I try to learn as I go!!
