I'm not an educator, but I sure do salute everyone who is--and I appreciate those who keep the magic going despite oppressive regulations. My 11-year-old nephew had a magical teacher this year, and what a difference it made to him. A clever and cute end-of-the-year idea she used was A-B-C starting with A on the 26th to the last day of school. It's probably not a new idea for teachers, but it was new to this aunt. And each day there were things related to the letter of the day--but even more important to the kids, a countdown! Hats off to every educator, may your summer be restful and your spirits renewed.

Been there. Done that. Grew from it. And it's a lesson for the child, too, to know that no one is perfect. One of my favorite words with kids is "re-visit," as in, "I want to re-visit something with you. . ." and then the amends. Be well. You do your best every day. That counts!

I feel that Tom. We take the high road; we turn away from misinformed criticism, drama and innuendo about what we do and we forge onward in the best interests of kids. Best of all, we support each other on the journey. One can never be condemned for caring.
Cheers brother.

Put one foot in front of the other, and soon you'll be . . . doing whatever needs to be done. Ah, if it only was that easy. Educators deserve great praise and encouragement, and I send that to any educator who reads this! I owe my career to great teachers, who taught me so much more than the basics.

This makes me cry--not just because those are my nephews pictured, but because the words are so wise, so needed, so necessary, so vital. Keep at it, educators. I believe in you and honor you and appreciate you!

Right on Tom. You could argue that the only thing that does matter is relationships. It is the key to building trust, respect, value and all the things that lead you down the road to success, yes, acdemic success. So I say it's time to get back to valuing each other; our dreams, hopes, aspirations and the uniqueness that makes our country a cradle of innovation and dreams come true.

After reading your post I thought of another hidden cost of this type evaluation model (and product of a culture of fear) is that we are making people afraid to fail. When that is the value that we surround our educational institutions with, no worthwhile learning is going to happen.

Thanks for the thought provoking post!
